An innovation in laser technology that unlocks new possibilities

QR - VCSELs

Existing VCSEL technology is the laser of choice for applications including optical  mice, facial recognition in smart phones and high-speed datacentre interconnects. The emission wavelength of commercially available technology is limited and prohibits the use of VCSELs in a broad range of longer-wavelength applications such as telecoms-wavelength fibre networks and below-screen sensing applications.

QR-VCSELs can enhance the portfolio of applications for the VCSEL industry. The devices can harness the benefits of mature VCSEL technology and incorporate a patented approach to light emission to allow emission throughout the telecoms ‘O’-band and ‘C’-band.

DRIVE YOUR TECHNOLOGY

Benefits of QR-VCSELs

Low Power Consumption

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are known for their energy efficiency and require significantly less power than traditional laser diodes. This efficiency is particularly beneficial in datacentres and other environments where efficient power consumption and reduced heat generation is at the forefront of the industry. Traditional telecoms lasers often necessitate complex and costly cooling solutions to maintain optimal performance. VCSELs, however, offer less stringent cooling requirements due to the reduced heat generation of the devices.

Emission Normal to the Wafer Surface

VCSELs emit light perpendicular to the wafer surface, a characteristic that simplifies their integration into various optical systems. This emission pattern allows for more straightforward alignment and coupling with optical fibres and other components, enhancing the overall efficiency of the optical systems. Additionally, the vertical emission facilitates the creation of compact and densely packed arrays of lasers, which are essential for applications requiring high data throughput, such as optical interconnects and 3D sensing technologies. The normal emission provides precise control over the array geometry, opening up prospects for unique applications dependent on carefully arranged lasers.

Highly-Scalable Low-Cost Manufacturing

VCSELs offer a distinct advantage in terms of manufacturing scalability and cost-efficiency. Well-established production process for VCSELs enable high-volume manufacturing at a lower cost per unit. This scalability is essential for meeting the growing demand in applications such as telecommunications, consumer electronics, and automotive industries. The ability to produce large quantities of VCSELs without significant cost increases ensures that cutting-edge laser technology can be integrated into a wide range of products and solutions.
